The Opel Mokka X with 140-hp gasoline and 4-wheel test

Tags

Perhaps you know this: the closer kinship does not live around the corner, but several hundred kilometers away. So go into the car to watch for Christmas or other holidays. Best with a diesel under the hood. Or would you rather choose King Otto? After all, the auto-ignition has not been a focal point until the Volkswagen scandal. Driving bans for indoor areas attract dark clouds on the horizon and the exhaust gas question remains a long-term incinerator. Last but not least the extra charge of a diesel is not always worth it. More than enough car owners drive clear distances and use their car maximum on holidays or even on the holidays for really long distances. As an example, we tested a popular SUV: the Opel Mokka X with 140 hp turbo-benzine plus all-wheel drive.

Space yes, miracle no
Let's take a look at the "new" Opel Mokka, which has the additional letter X since the facelift in 2016. The model maintenance has done the car well: Changed headlights and subtle retouching take him some of his chumminess. However, this is also due to the dimensions: At 4.27 meters, the Mokka X has a pleasantly traffic-compatible length. It makes it so popular: Not too small and not too big, many customers value it. Like the SUV-typical high and comfortable entrance. However, when looking to the rear, the shadow side is in the truest sense of the word: wide C-pillars and a rising window line lent the view to the rear. In the rear, the Mokka X also does not have any brilliance. The place is enough to describe here, but would be exaggerated. Similar problems with space utilization were also the old Astra and the first Insignia. An improvement for the next Mokka. Between 356 and 1,372 liters fit into the luggage compartment. No surpassing values, but with a view to the outer length surprised how much with folded down seats. The wide opening of the loader opening is positive.

Stylishly decorated
The luggage and all the gifts are loaded, on the driver's seat. Our test car was equipped with EGR seating in the front row. The required 685 euros should be invested, especially on long distances, the seats provide good side support and pull-out thigh support for the best comfort. In the course of the model maintenance (the X, you already know ...) Opel has cleans the Mokka cockpit clearly from buttons and with more high-quality materials papered. So the compact SUV does not have to hide from supposed premium brands. The instruments have also been simplified: they are no longer in tubes and are informal and informal.

With perfect help to the goal
The navigation system, which is required to be prized, is now equipped with an eight-inch touch screen. Although it is no longer as directly in the field of view as the old monitor, the input is very easy. The search is optimized by the standard OnStar service. I press the button in the skylight and am connected to a friendly person. I say, for example, only the hotel name and the city and get ratzfatz the address in the Navi transferred. I could just as well request a remote diagnosis of the most important resources by service button. Only a concierge service is missing, which recommends me restaurants or similar after Gusto. On the way to my requested hotel, "Navi 900 IntelliLink", the official name, develops by itself excellent evasive routes in traffic jams and warns also of road narrowings and the like. The 950 euros are invested in the best way, especially as the smartphone connection via USB is unnecessary. Apple CarPlay worked only with original cable, but also not always. This function is only worthwhile for those who do not like the extra charge for the factory navi and prefer to use the hand type. Otherwise: better activate Bluetooth and listen to music via USB stick.

Softly on all fours
Listening gives us a good catchword: Under the hood of our Opel Mokka X is a familiar acquaintance, namely the 1.4-liter turbo-benzine with 140 HP power. It remains acoustically unobtrusive, only above 130 km / h the noise is disturbing. As a result, the ideal travel speed crystallizes quickly, especially as the unit only increases moderately with the additional weight of the all-wheel drive (about 50 kilograms) at a higher pace. In winter conditions the Traktionsplus does not hurt certainly, whether the surcharge of almost 2,000 euros is necessary, is in the personal discretion. If you would like to have all-wheel-drive and automatic, you have to go to the Turbobenziner with 152 hp, which is only offered in this combination. 1.800 euros is the extra charge to the weaker 4x4 petrol brother.

Switch and switch
What else is there to mention? The steering supplies little feedback in the city, but at a higher pace it works perfectly. The manual circuit could be a little more fluid, and occasionally requires a bit of emphasis. If you would like the 140 hp petrol engine we tested with automatic, it only gets it with front-wheel drive. In this combination, the Mokka X is 560 euros cheaper than the hand-held four-wheel version.

Let there be light!
The rear axle of the Mokka X is worthy of criticism: the worse the road becomes, the more restless the car rolls off. A little more comfort should therefore be in the specification for the development of the next Mokka X. On normal ground however convinced the rolling comfort of the 18-inch tires installed in our test car. A good thing are the AFL headlights with LED technology as standard starting with the innovation equipment. They offer nine functions to illuminate the street, such as a country road light or a city light. Depending on the environment, the light cone becomes longer or wider. It is, however, not possible to distinguish between traffic signs: Depending on the degree of contamination of the front screen in the area of the camera, it acknowledges its service. The 700 euros surcharge (including track assistant) do not have to be. The red cockpit light of the collision warning flashes at a rather late pace, while the park sensors are very hastily beating like wild beasts.

The seven-liter car
Let us now turn to the cost section. Is the gasoline worthwhile on long journeys? Answer: Yes, but only with sensitive foot in conjunction with cruise control. Our best value for pure highway travel with constant 124 km / h and just under 3,000 revolutions: 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers. The overall average, however, with city, country road, changing drivers, different weather conditions and also faster times, our Mokka X was 8.3 liters. If you would like to note at this point that motor journalists have a lead foot: We are in the frame, as a glance at various consumption comparison portals shows. The all-wheel-drive four-wheel drive with 140 bhp is 7.5 liters, only a few participants reach a front-wheel drive of less than seven liters.

Save with petrol
The 140-hp machine is therefore not particularly economical. But compared to the comparable diesel with 136 hp and all-wheel drive the gasoline is cheaper by 2,500 euros. Enough money so for many tank fillings. It goes at 24.890 euros, we recommend the handle to the Mokka X as "innovation" for 27.210 euros. Even then you are still below the cheapest 136-hp 4x4 diesel. Sensible things such as front and rear parking sensors, an excellent two-zone climate control system and the AFL light are a standard feature of the innovation equipment. We recommend the winter package with heated front seats and steering wheel (350 euros), the front seats (685 euros) and the navigation system (950 euros). Makes the bottom line 29.195 euros. This makes the Opel Mokka X a good thousand under a slightly longer Seat Ateca with 150 hp, all-wheel drive and comparable equipment.
